Sketchbook kept aboard H.M.S. Beagle

Sketchbook kept aboard H.M.S. Beagle

Conrad Martens, South America, 1833-1834
MS Add.7983

The captain of H.M.S. Beagle, Robert Fitzroy, employed artists on board his ship to record the landscape, people and events of the voyage. Martens made pencil and water-colour sketches which he later worked up into full scale water-colours. Of the four sketchbooks from the voyage, two are in the University Library and two in Australia, where Martens lived out the rest of his life after leaving the Beagle at Valparaiso.

Gift of Nora, Lady Barlow, 1973.
