The engraved portrait of Galileo by Francesco Villamena used as frontispiece to the first edition of his Il Saggiatore, printed at Rome by Giacomo Mascardi in 1623. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library the University Library has recently acquired a fine copy of this celebrated polemic for the new science.
