We digitise directly from the manuscripts using a Phase One P45 digital back and Capture One PRO software, or a Better Light Super 8K scanning back, and Better Light Viewfinder software. The images are captured at life size whenever possible, at 600 DPI, with 24 bit colour. The screen and the camera are calibrated automatically. The original images are TIFF files at 100% quality, and the delivery images are JPEG files at 80% quality. The storage format is TIFF, and the original images are stored, with embedded metadata, on a secure file server system developed by staff at the Cambridge University Library with the assistance of staff from the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory, and copied to DVD-ROM. We used to digitise directly from the manuscripts using the Kontran Progres 3012, which had an Adobe Photoshop plug-in, which included a calibration set-up. Adobe Photoshop was used for image manipulation, colour matching was by eye, sharpening was applied, and balance, contrast and brightness were adjusted by eye. The images were digitized at 300 DPI with 24 bit colour. Pixel detail was 2400x3200x24 bits or 3200x2400x24 bits. The original images were stored as JPEG files at 95% quality, and the delivery images were JPEG files at 80% quality. The delivery formats of the images were JPEG or PNG, depending on the browser, the storage format was JPEG, and the images were stored in the University's archival file store and on CD-ROM. |
