Opening Day

The official opening of the new University Library was performed by King George V, accompanied by Queen Mary, on 22nd October 1934, the Reading Room being specially fitted out for the occasion. In his speech the King declared:

"A Library such as this is both a powerhouse and a testing station of educational activities. It inspires and helps the work of specialists in every field of research and it provides from generation to generation the standards of truth and sound learning by which the fresh products of science and scholarship are tried.
