The University Library maintains a modest collection of microform holdings relating to Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The following are worth noting:

1. Archivo biográfico de España, Portugal e Iberoamérica

The three microfiche series of the Archivo biográfico de España, Portugal e Iberoamérica contain 2,633 microfiches. They reproduce biographical articles taken from 866 biographical dictionaries and encyclopedias publíshed between 1602 and 1995.

Series one (ABEPI) is based on more than 300 reference works published between 1602 and 1926, and contains entries on 123,000 individuals. Approximately 50% of the material pertains exclusively to Spain and Portugal, the Balearic and Canary Islands. The material collected on a total of 21 Latin American countries is the first biographical cumulation for this part of the world.

Series two (ABEPI II) focuses on a further 333 biographical reference works from the middle of the 19th century to the 1950s. The information specialises more specifically on prominent personalities from the most significant Spanish and Portuguese cities and provinces.

Series three (ABEPI III) is a cumulation of 198 biographical reference works published between 1960 and 1995.

2. Archivo del Libertador

58 microfilm reels of the collection of source materials relating to Simón Bolívar, housed in his birthplace in Caracas, Venezuela. The archive is divided into four sections - Sección O'Leary, Sección Archivo Nacional y otras fuentes; Sección PéSección Juan de Francisco Martrez y Soto; and Sección Juan de Francisco Martín.

3. Escritoras españolas, 1500-1900

A comprehensive collection of works by Spanish women writers, based on the holdings of the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid. The collection aims to republish works not previously reprinted, using the best editions available.

The collection consists of 2,077 microfiches. It is divided into two parts.

Part 1, 1500-1800, reproduces 112 books. It contains spiritual and religious writings, many inspired by Saint Teresa, whose works are also reproduced. It also includes chronicles by María de Guevara, plays by Angela de Acevedo and Ana Caro, novels by María de Zayas and María de Carvajal.

Part 2, 1800-1900, is more substantial, and reproduces 490 books. Amongst works of belles-lettres novels predominate, by Fernán Caballero, Pilar Sinués and Emilia Pardo Bazán amongst others. Poetry is represented by such authors as Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Carolina Coronado and Rosalía de Castro, drama by Rosario de Acuñre a significant number of titles on religious topa. There are a significant number of titles on religious topics, but also material on the art of reading, on home economics, the natural sciences and arithmetic.

The collection is accompanied by two printed guides, which give detailed bibliographical descriptions of the titles in the collection.

4. Latin American documents

A large collection of more than 11,000 Latin American titles on microform produced between 1969 and 1989. The subject range of the collection is extraordinarily diverse, embracing subject areas within the natural sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences. Brazilian imprints are well represented. Coverage includes both monographs and periodical runs. Selection was made from the entries in the 'Recent books' section of the Inter-American review of bibliography (Classmark: P850.c.130) from 1960 onwards, supplemented by new titles added to the U.S. National Union Catalog.

At first produced on microprint (Microprint Ser. 1), and then on microfilm, consisting of 1207 reels (Microfilm Series 2). Enquire in the Microform Reading Room.

Access to the collection is via a card catalogue of authors currently located in the south side of the Reading Room Corridor.
