Under the terms of the Legal Deposit Libraries Act of 2003 and the Legal Deposit Libraries (Non-Print Works) Regulations 2013 access to electronic legal deposit material may only be provided to readers “on library premises controlled by the deposit library”. The six Legal Deposit libraries of the UK and Ireland are:

  • British Library
  • Cambridge University Library
  • Bodleian Library
  • National Library of Scotland
  • National Library of Wales
  • Trinity College Dublin

Access in the University of Cambridge is available in the main University Library and its Affiliated Libraries, initially on dedicated PCs. This is so that we can manage the service and monitor its performance more easily. It also allows us to offer the best possible support to readers as this new way of discovering content is being introduced. In the longer term we aim to expand the service within library reading rooms.  Access cannot be made available in college libraries since they are not covered by the terms of the legislation.

Main University Library

Dedicated terminals for access to electronic legal deposit, with printing facilities, are available in the main Reading Room.  Staff at the reference desk in this room will be happy to provide guidance.  Access for readers with disabilities can be provided in the Assistive Technology Room.  Please ask in the main Reading Room for further details.

Discovering Electronic Legal Deposit material

Electronic publications acquired through legal deposit can be discovered through iDiscover, both within the libraries and externally, but links to the full text will only work within the University Library and Affiliated Libraries.

Terms of Use

The regulations place a number of important restrictions on use of the deposited publications:

  • One concurrent user per work per library, i.e. across the main University Library and its Affiliated Libraries
  • No digital copying is permitted, i.e. no downloading, copying and pasting, or photography
  • Limited printing
