Welcome to Inter-Library Loans

The University Library offers an Inter-Library Loan service which provides access to material not held within Cambridge University whilst also supplying material from its own stock to other libraries.

For Cambridge University Library Users

A wide variety of printed and microform material can be obtained from the British Library and other Libraries within the UK and overseas, including:

  • Books (and chapters from books)
  • Theses
  • Journal articles (and loan of whole issues)
  • Conference papers
  • Selected microforms

Anyone who has access to the University Library may use this service. The fee for an Inter-Library Loan request is currently £3.00 for members of Cambridge University and £6.00 for all other readers. Payment can be made in cash or by cheque made payable to "University of Cambridge".

The Inter-Library Loans department, West Room, Reading Room and Microform Reading Room together constitute the Reference Department, whose staff are responsible for the delivery of the University Library’s service to its users both in person and remotely.

The Reference Department has six main service functions: enquiry work; book, periodical and microform fetching; supply and delivery of material via inter-library loan; maintenance of the reference collections; assistance to readers in the use of IT and assistance to readers with special needs.

Other Libraries

The Inter-Library Loans department is able to provide loans or copies of items held within the collections of the University Library and several other Departmental and Faculty libraries. We welcome requests from Libraries within the UK, Republic of Ireland and Overseas
