This page describes how to obtain images and theses from the Library. If you also wish to include the images in a publication, website or broadcast you must additionally complete our licensing process. This can be done at the same time as ordering images or at a later date, when you are ready to publish. Please allow plenty of time when ordering from us. Some material may take a few weeks to process if it requires checking by curators or conservators, or needs specialist photography.
Step 1: Requesting images
Please complete the online image request form with as much information as you are able to provide. It is important that you give full contact details, clearly describe the material you want copied, and specify what kind of image you require (e.g. lower resolution version for personal study or a higher resolution image for publication). You will also be asked to review and agree to our terms and conditions.
Once submitted you will receive a copy of your request by email. You will also be asked to print, sign and return to us a copyright declaration form - as a scan (to firstname.lastname@example.org), fax (to +44 (0) 1223 339684), or by post (see contact details). This is in order to comply with UK copyright law. We will not be able to complete your order until we receive a signature from you.
Library staff will review your request form and the material itself and will provide you with a firm quotation, usually within a week or two of placing your request. We will provide the cheapest pricing we can that will satisfy your requirements and ensure that the material can be safely and successfully imaged. Not all material is suitable for photocopying and some must only be imaged using professional photography. As a guide, our current price list is available here. Please note that there is a minimum charge of £10 (+VAT, if applicable).
Step 2: Paying for your images
Our quotation will indicate the option(s) available to meet your request and the amount you will need to pay along with instructions on how to make payment. Once payment is made we are usually able to supply the images within three to four weeks.
Step 3: Receiving your images
When your order is ready we will email you with a download link or - if the order is very large or you have paid extra for postal delivery - we will place the item in the post. Your order is now complete. Please check the images within one week of receiving them and if there are any problems contact email@example.com immediately so we can address them.
