(a) To find where journals/newspapers are held within Cambridge
Holdings of the University Library, its dependant libraries and the faculty, departmental and college libraries are included in the appropriate individual Newton catalogues. LibrarySearch enables you to search all these catalogues at once.
(b) To find where journals/newspapers are held outside of Cambridge
SUNCAT is the new Serials Union Catalogue for the United Kingdom that shows where periodicals are held in most major UK libraries. It was only launched in 2005 and so still far from complete or definitive (although new data is being added all the time). It includes holdings of the British Library, Oxford, Cambridge etc etc.
COPAC will also show you if a periodical is held in one of the major research libraries in the UK. (It differs from SUNCAT in being predominantly a book catalogue.)
You can check the holdings of the British Library in their Integrated Catalogue (You should then restrict your search by clicking on Catalogue Subset Search and choosing Serials and periodicals.)
The periodical collections of the British Library are also listed with the holdings of the British Library Document Supply Centre although this file has not been updated since 1999, having been superseded by SUNCAT and the British Library Integrated Catalogue.
The largest collection of printed newspapers in the UK is held by the British Library and detailed in the catalogue of the British Library Newspaper Division
The OCLC Union List of Periodicals will show you if a periodical is held in major research libraries throughout the world.
ZDF (Zeitschriften Daten Bank) is the union list of periodicals held in over 4,000 libraries in Germany.
Many other catalogues of individual libraries throughout the world can be consulted from our Catalogues page
You are reminded that titles not held in Cambridge can very often be obtained for you on Interlibrary loan.
