Library readers who are members of the University are welcome to bring up to two visitors at a time to see exhibitions. Members of the public who do not hold Library readers' tickets may be able to make an appointment with the curator to gain access to the exhibition area. Almshouses in England from the tenth century onwards
This exhibition, which runs from 26 March until 26 June, is a survey of the history of almshouses, defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "houses founded by private charity, for the reception and support of the (usually aged) poor". It includes diagrams of the various forms of architecture used in the design of these distinctive buildings; examples of people who founded almshouses, and those who lived in them; and some of the kinds of rules and regulations that almspeople were expected to follow.
