On Campus access

The majority of the online databases and electronic journals provide on-campus access through recognition of a workstation's IP address within the cam.ac.uk domain. Others might, however, require a Raven password.

Some PC's on Cambridge are using private IP addresses. This means that they do not have a Cambridge domain IP, but instead need to be on a section of the network that is configured to appear externally as part of the Cambridge domain. Use the IP address checker to determine your PC's IP address and see if it is private. If needs be, contact your local computer officer for assistance.

Off Campus access

Most of the resources we list in our website are only available off-campus to current staff and current students of the University of Cambridge who have been issued with a Raven password or a VPDN connection.

When "off-campus" and clicking on title links in the ejournals list or via the CrossSearch service, you will be routed to the providers site via a proxy server. You will be prompted to enter a Raven username and password.

Databases in the databases A-Z may require a seperate login.

You should only have to login once per web browser session.

Login with Raven.

Users on lapwing are advised to try the alternative Eduroam service if at all possible.

RAVEN

Cambridge University Library and the University Computing Service operate a local authentication service using RAVEN to provide access to resources.

Information about Raven, including how to get a Raven password, is available on the Computing Service web site.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions are also available; other questions and requests for support on Raven should be addressed to the University Library Raven helpdesk at lib-raven@lists.cam.ac.uk.

Economic and Social Data Service

In addition to RAVEN, some electronic resources require you to register with the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) before you can access the resource. Registration is free. To register, go to http://www.esds.ac.uk/ and follow the steps below.

  1. Click Login/Register.
  2. Select “Login via UK Federation” leading to a RAVEN login prompt.
  3. Type in your username and password. New users will be offered a Registration Form to complete.
  4. Read through the terms and conditions of ESDS, and click the button to indicate that you accept them.
  5. Once you have accepted the terms of ESDS you will be sent an e-mail asking you to confirm your intention to register. Click on the link in the e-mail and your registration will be complete. You will now be able to use ESDS services.

Virtual Private Dial-up Network (VPDN)

VPDN is a network that uses encryption to provide secure connection through the Internet. The service allows eligible users with a broadband connection to authenticate themselves so that they have access to facilities restricted to University of Cambridge readership. Please contact the Computing Service for more information about using this service.

Copyright and licensing

Students and staff of the University and library readers are reminded that the use of online databases, electronic journals, and CD-Roms is subject to copyright law and the publishers' licence terms which cover downloading, printing, and re-use of content. It is the individual's responsibility to ensure that their actions do not breach copyright or the licence agreements. Failure to do so could result in the publisher withdrawing the University's access to a resource. Terms and conditions of use are often incorporated into the resources themselves. Copies of licences for individual digital resources or collections are available on request from Electronic Services and Systems

Copyright licensing

Information for staff and students on copyright licensing is available from the University web pages.

Downloading and printing

Downloading and printing from digital resources is covered by copyright law and licence terms. In general, only one copy of one article may be downloaded or printed from an e-journal. Downloading or printing multiple copies or whole journal volumes is not permitted. For online databases and CD-Roms users should consult the individual licence terms for each resource.

Access restrictions

Licences for a number of databases and e-journals restrict access to current staff and students of the University of Cambridge. These resources are protected by Raven (Shibboleth) password. See above for details. Access to other databases and CD-Roms is available only to walk-in users within Cambridge University Library or, where permitted, within the University of Cambridge domain.

Proxy servers

Open proxy servers may not be used to provide access to licensed digital resources by unauthorised users. Publishers and service providers who discover that open proxy servers are being used in this way may take action to block access, either to the individual IP address or the whole cam.ac.uk domain.
