Keeping Time
Time for Navigation
This log of the voyage of H.M.S. Resolution was kept by the astronomer aboard, William Wales. Wales was also a cartographer and his maps of the islands discovered by Cook are some of the first to bear the longitude as found by marine chronometer. In the log the entries for longitude `D.R.' are by dead reckoning; `K.' by Kendall's chronometer. Shown is the drawing of Norfolk Island on which the printed plate is based.
