Cambridge University Libraries is seeking to appoint a Head of Digital Services to lead and manage the teams responsible for the delivery and support of the University Libraries core digital infrastructure and services.

The Digital Services team provides and supports a wide range of infrastructure and services for staff and students at the University of Cambridge and the global academic communities, providing access to collections provided by the University Libraries contributing to the University's mission of Research and Teaching.

The Head of Digital Services will report to the Deputy Director for Digital Initiatives and will contribute to the strategic direction of the Libraries' digital and IT strategy, and will play a key role in leading and managing delivery of infrastructure and services in support of the Libraries' strategy. They will be a member of the Libraries' Senior Management Group and will actively engage with all library departments to support their activities to deliver the Libraries' strategy by providing robust and effective digital services. The role holder will need to plan, prioritise and deliver services and projects within a busy and complex organisation.

The Head of Digital Services manages the Library and Web Services, and the Desktop and Technical Operations Teams. Key library services supported include:

  • Library management system and discovery services (Ex Libris' Alma, Leganto and Primo platforms),
  • A warehouse management system (use in the Library Storage Facility in Ely);
  • Institutional and data repositories (DSpace)
  • Electronic Legal Deposit access service
  • Archive management system
  • Digital Preservation system (soon to be implemented)
  • Web-based platforms and services
  • Storage, server and network infrastructure
  • Windows Desktops

We are looking for someone with a thorough understanding of the business areas and their capabilities, to analyse business requirements and work with the Libraries' Development and Digital Teams, the University Information Services and suppliers to enhance and deliver suitable solutions, systems and services for the Libraries and their users. The role holder will work with the University's Information Services to ensure delivery of critical IT services and systems that underpin the libraries' operations across the University.

The Head of Digital Services will be required to keep up-to-date on developing services, architectures, standards and capabilities so that the University Libraries are positioned as innovators and leaders in the provision of technical services, library systems, the associated institutional repositories and digital preservation infrastructure and services.

Applicants would be expected to demonstrate significant experience of managing IT staff and a strong technical knowledge across the breadth of IT within a library or academic institution. They should be confident communicators and will have a strong user-focused approach to service-development as well as a commitment to service excellence. Excellent organisational skills and proven experience in delivery of projects in a complex environment are required. The ideal candidate would be expected to strike a balance between maintaining reliable, resilient and secured services and continuously driving forward a change agenda making continuous improvements across the Digital landscape.

The post is a full-time open-ended academic-related role in the University Libraries.
