Book marking appears to be an international activity. We could have produced examples of marginalia in most major languages.

This example was chosen because it is colourful.

On discovery, readers often claim that in their country (and we will not reveal the most frequently cited one!) it is normal to mark library books. They must have interesting collections in their national libraries.
