Ripping text out of books is more often done by readers who cannot borrow, but not exclusively so. Such criminal damage is quicker and cheaper than paying for photocopying at seven pence per page. And some of our readers are really cheap. One academic, at a business school, thought that ripping articles out of journals was a good idea because it gave him a competitive edge over his rivals.
