Filming and photography requests

Cambridge University Libraries welcomes applications for television, film, radio, print and other media projects including for educational, commercial and entertainment purposes. We can provide access to both our spaces and collections, as well as our specialists who may be available to share their expertise in the form of an interview or consultation.

Availability

We will consider all requests for video, film and still photography provided the filming does not disrupt the libraries’ readers. Where possible, we ask that filming takes place outside of term time (see the University of Cambridge’s term dates and calendars).

All filming and photography requests are subject to the availability of the appropriate staff and we therefore ask that you give us at least 21 days’ notice of your request.

Charges

All photography and filming requests require the support of numerous staff and are therefore subject to fees. Each request is provided with a bespoke quotation based on the level of support required, as well as the size of crew, so please submit a request form to help us provide you with an accurate idea of charges. Please note, depending on the nature or complexity of the request, there may be charges for staff time spent in facilitating the request before (and after) shooting takes place - not just the time spent on site by your crew.

Applying

Those wishing to film or take photography are asked to submit a request form (click to download) and to send the completed form to Stuart Roberts by emailing sjr81@cam.ac.uk. For your request to be considered, the applicant must confirm they agree to our Location Filming Agreement and that they are able to provide evidence of the production company’s Public Liability Insurance.

Collection image and licencing requests

To order or licence images from the libraries’ collections, or for specialist photography and other audio-visual services, you can contact our Digital Content Unit.

The above information applies only to the main University Library on West Road, and affiliated libraries. Filming and photography for other libraries within the University of Cambridge should be directed to the individual library. It is possible to film Colleges and departments from the public highway without needing permission from the University. For more information visit Filming in Cambridge (Cambridgeshire County Council).
