Visit of Chinese Ambassador

The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mme. Fu Ying Ө visited the Library on 29th November 2007, and viewed a display of rare items from the Library’s Chinese collections. She is seen here with Mr Cao Zhouhua ܻ (First Secretary, Science and Technology) and Charles Aylmer, Head of the Library’s Chinese Department, inspecting an original copy of Designs of Chinese buildings, furniture, dresses, machines, and utensils (London, 1757) by Sir William Chambers (1723-1796). This work includes Chambers’ design for the famous pagoda in Kew Gardens, and was one of nine books sent by King George III to the Qianlong Emperor with Lord Macartney’s mission to China in 1792. The books were rediscovered in the archives of the Forbidden City in 2005 and a set of facsimiles was given to H.M. The Queen by the Ambassador when she presented her letters of credence on 12th June 2007.
