Join us at a reception to celebrate our exhibition of early Korean Bibles from the Bible Society’s Library, on view in the University Library’s Entrance Hall throughout May. Remarks by curators and librarians will be accompanied by an exclusive view of additional works related to 19th and early 20th missionary translators.

Early missionaries from the UK learned the Korean language and began translating the Bible into Korean without entering the country, which was closed to foreigners. Biblical translation was a collaborative effort of Scottish missionaries, a British philanthropist and Korean helpers.

The missionaries’ extraordinary dedication under unique and difficult circumstances came to fruition with the publication of the first books of the Bible in the Korean language: the Gospels of Luke and John in 1882 and the entire New Testament in 1887. The work of Biblical translation laid the foundation for missionary work within Korea beginning in 1885.
