The Conservation and Collection Care Department plays a vital role in safeguarding the Library’s collections, ensuring their continued care, preservation and accessibility for future generations.

Visit the studio and hear the conservation team talk about the conservation treatments carried out on the Library’s Special Collections. The collections consist of a wide range of material including manuscripts, early printed books, photographs, art on paper, papyrus, parchment and archives, requiring a wide range of approaches to conservation. In addition to interventive treatments, the Collection Care team carry out preventative work which includes the creation of bespoke archival boxes for ensuring safe storage of the most vulnerable books. The team also make custom display mounts for events and exhibitions.
