Title: St[eamer] Point Aden [i.e. 'Adan]
Description: A panoramic view looking down on Steamer Point from the east, with ships and boats in the harbour. A good description of this part of the settlement occurs in: Hunter, Frederick Mercer (1877), 'The British Settlement of Aden', London. Hunter wrote: 'Steamer point...where there is a crescent [Prince of Wales Crescent] consisting of some fair sized houses nearly all double and some treble storied. Behind these again are several streets of...buildings reaching to the hillside. Here are two hotels, a police station, and the residences of a few consuls...' (1877, p.9). This photograph would appear to be taken before 1876 as a 'handsome castiron jetty' mentioned by Hunter as being constructed in that year has not yet been built. The photographer is unknown but Hunter states: 'There are two depots, both located at Steamer Point, where portraits are taken by photography...Views of the different places of interest in the Settlement and neighbourhood can be obtained, and as they have been taken by a amateur who thoroughly understood the art, they are well worth the small sum charged for each copy. An excellent panoramic view of the camp was taken by this artist, and can be purchased for Rs. 6 per copy' (1877, p.86).
