Reorganisation of the current paper catalogues to meet
international archiving standards.
The Photograph Project aims to repackage the highly detailed information
contained in the current typescript catalogues to comply with international
archiving standards. Conforming to international standards will improve
access to the photographs by ensuring that descriptions are consistent and
appropriate for the needs of researchers. It will also facilitate the exchange
of information with other collections and archives.
Once the information has been reorganised it will be entered
into a Microsoft Access database. The database, known as CANTAB, was designed
specifically for the Cambridge Archivists Group and follows the
International Council on Archives'
General International Standard on Archival Description (ISAD(G)).
The Project team will also index the photographs by location and by
person/organisation. Name authorities will conform to the National Council on
Rules for the construction of personal, place and corporate names
and locations will be taken from the
Getty Thesaurus of Geographical Names.
The addition of these index points will enable researchers to search for
photographs taken by a certain person or of a particular place.
