J Parting was a watchmaker and daguerreotypist in Colombo circa 1854-59. From circa 1859-60, Parting worked as a watchmaker and photographer. Bingham states that Parting introduced photography to Colombo (1921, p.xiv). Parting made an unsuccessful attempt to photograph Governor Ward turning the first sod of the Colombo-Kandy railway on the 3rd August 1858. Parting sold the photographic business to William Skeen. Parting left Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) on board the 'Nubia' on the 21st June 1860.
