The first teaching of the historical Buddha in the Deer Park at Sārnāth (eastern Uttar Pradesh). The central figure is the Buddha making the gesture of teaching. Two disciples honour the Buddha. At the front of the lotus throne is a wheel of the law (dharmacakra) and two deer. From MS Add. 1464, fol. 127v (detail), a palm leaf manuscript of The perfection of wisdom in 8,000 lines, the oldest dated illustrated Sanskrit manuscript in the world (997 CE). Part of the Sanskrit Manuscripts Project.
