The first teaching of the historical Buddha in the Deer Park at Sārnāth (eastern Uttar Pradesh). The central figure is the Buddha making the gesture of teaching. Two disciples honour the Buddha. At the front of the lotus throne is a wheel of the law (dharmacakra) and two deer.
