Letters - part 7

Letters to and from Arthur Bliss written between 1972 and the 1975

This archive comprises the surviving original letters sent to Arthur Bliss and original and photocopies of letters sent by him. During the years after his death Lady Bliss endeavoured to obtain originals and copies of as many letters by Sir Arthur as she could from the correspondents themselves or the archives that held them. It does not pretend to be exhaustive, for instance it does not include letters in the BBC Written Archives Centre or the British Library.

The letters are arranged here chronological order. Many of the letters do not include the year of writing, which has been supplied editorially, based on the evidence of the content of the letter, and the address from or to which the letter has been sent. The date as found on the letter is enclosed in brackets.

The conventions A.L.S. and T.L.S. indicate Autograph or Typed Letter Signed. The addressee is spelt out in full before the form found at the beginning of the letter, which is enclosed in brackets. The quotation from the letter is either the first or a more interesting section. The signature at the end of the letter is given after a slash. Futher notes on the content are added, with editorial amplifications in square brackets.

The letters are kept order of the correspondent, i.e. the person to whom Bliss bliss wrote or from whom he received a letter. Letters from officers of institutions or secretaries of individuals are under the institution or individual, e.g. letters from Michael Adeane, personal secretary to Queen Elizabeth, are filed under Elizabeth II.

For pratical purposes each file contains about 150 letters.
