Cambridge University Library

Cambridge University Library is carrying out exploratory work to consider the best ways to preserve the heritage of its landmark 1934 building, reduce its environmental footprint, and ensure it maintains its place at the leading edge of academic research long into the future.

Following a series of user consultations, the Library has worked with architects Herzog & de Meuron to develop a concept for addressing the building’s maintenance, access and other issues, and improving its environmental performance. The concepts also include ideas to reopen areas of the Library that were originally accessible to visitors but currently off-limits, thereby reinstating a greater range of research and learning spaces.

As we begin to shape a vision of the library’s long-term future, we would love to hear how these early concepts look and feel to you. If you would like to find out more, and add your voice to the discussion, please visit one of our exhibitions showcasing the ideas. These will be displayed at:

  • Cambridge University Library (20-26 January, Mon-Fri, 9am-6.45pm, Saturday, 9am-4.45pm, closed Sunday)

  • West Hub (27-30 January, 8am-7pm)

  • Cambridge Central Library (31 January, 10am-6pm, 1 February, 12pm-4pm)

Project representatives will be available to answer questions between 10-11am and 12 noon-1pm each day of the exhibition.

We will also be holding three in-person talks about the exploratory work; two at the University Library (2-3pm on 21 and 23 January) and one at West Hub (10-11am on 28 January). As seating is limited, booking for these talks is required. To book a place, please follow the links below:
