Got an old floppy disk gathering dust? Bring it back to life!
On the afternoon of Thursday 9 October, Cambridge University Library are hosting a floppy disk workshop where experts will attempt to copy the data from your floppy disk onto a modern format.
We can handle most common floppy disk types and systems, but there are a few limitations, and we require you to book a slot in advance. This ensures we have the right equipment ready for your disk and can give each one the best possible chance of being read.
The experts will aim to look at one floppy disk per person.
Please note before booking:
- We cannot work with ZIP disks, JAZ drives, SuperDisks, or other non-floppy portable media.
- Disks must be not be damaged and clean and free from mould or heavy dust.
- We cannot guarantee that your disk will be successfully copied.
- You must bring your own USB stick, hard drive, or other portable media to receive your copied files.
- Please be aware that we may see personal data while copying.
You will need to complete a short form in advance so we know what type of disk you have.
There will also be a drop-off point for donations of floppy disks, drives, and related equipment to support our preservation work.
The workshop is being held as part of the Future Nostalgia research project.
