Cambridge University Library

The post evolved from that of Assistant to specific Professors, many of them originally paid by the Professors, rather than the university. By grace of 7 June 1894 the appointments of Assistants to Professors were brought under the general regulations for Demonstrators. By grace of 11 December 1948, the old regulations for Assistants to Professors were rescinded and general regulations for what were now known as Assistants in Research were laid down, by which appointments and re-appointments, for periods not exceeding five years, were to be made by the Faculty Board (or, where appropropriate by the Faculty Board on the recommendation of the Head of the relevant Department ) subject to the consent of the General Board and the Financial Board .
