1. the assizes of bread, ale, whereby from 1381 the University regulated the quality and price of these goods exposed for sale in Cambridge; 2. the assize courts held periodically within the county, chiefly involving the university only from the (sometimes disputed) rights of the Assize Judges to free accommodation in the Lodge of the Master of Trinity. Although the assizes, as such, have been abolished, the university still assists with occasional ceremonies (including a church service) marking sittings of a High Court Judge.
