The Board of Extra-Mural Studies was until August 1991 the name of the Board for Continuing Education. Established by James Stuart in the 1870s, and originally housed in Stuart House, Mill Lane, the BEMS moved to Madingley Hall in 1975. The archives of the Board are deposited in the University Archives (classmark: UA BEMS) and there is a typescript catalogue of them available in the MSS Room at the University Library (In.17). For a short account see C. L. Wayer, ‘Extra-Mural Studies’, Cambridge 4 (1979) pp. 31-35.
