Established by grace 1 of 15 May 1991, two years after the Vice-Chancellorship ceased to be a two-year appointment. On a ballot the Regent House decided that the number of Pro-Vice-Chancellors should be limited to one, who could be any member of the Regent House, whose tenure would be three years and to whom would be allotted a specific area of responsibility. A report of the Council of the Senate, dated 24 January 1996 recommended increasing the number of Pro-Vice-Chancellors to two, their tenure not to exceed three years. This report was graced on 23 February 1996. For a list of Pro-Vice-Chancellors go to http://http://venn.lib.cam.ac.uk/Documents/acad/lists/index.html.
