Formerly, having one’s name ‘enscribed upon the boards of a College’ defined one as a resident member of the College and the University. Those who, on leaving the university, wished to retain their rights as MAs to be members of the Senate paid a modest fee to keep their names on the College boards. See also buttery boards.
