A tax on all members of the university, except sizars, originally imposed in 1825 in the form of an annual payment of 1s 6d, payable in quarterly instalments, to provide funds for the University Library; a further tax was introduced as a result of Sir John Patteson’s Award in 1856 whereby all members of the University, except those whose names were on the Register, paid an annual sum (2s 8d usually) towards the University’s contribution towards improvements in the town (drainage, paving, etc.). 6s was also due annually from all senior Doctors, BDs, MAs and LLMs as a contribution to the University Chest. In 1866 these separate sums were combined into a single payment from all members of the university, except sizars, of 17s.
