Used, confusingly, of 1. hostels, 2. the dining hall of Colleges, and 3. as part of the title of certain fully-fledged Colleges (e.g. New Hall, Trinity Hall). In this last sense the term was commonly attached to institutions now universally called ‘colleges’, notably Pembroke Hall and Clare Hall. The present college, Clare Hall, thus represents a re-use of the old title of its founding institution.
