Cambridge University Library

(1) the University Offices: the business rooms of University administrative officers and their staff, now partly in the Old Schools; (2) certain defined appointments in the University, distinguished between ‘administrative’ officers (including the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Librarian, as well as more obviously administrative officials); and ‘teaching’ officers (e.g. professors, university lecturers). However, not all academical appointments were ‘officers’ and there was until recently a distinction (e.g. in terms of entitlement to study leave) beween ‘officers’ and ‘holders of posts’. All the above were also to be distinguished from ‘employees of the University’, that is mainly Assistant Staff.
