Lat. Sophista, often abbreviated to Soph, basically an undergraduate who was not yet a questionist but has ceased to be a freshman. By the seventeenth century the distinction is made between Junior Sophs (students in their second year) and Senior Sophs (those in their third). The word ‘Soph’ survived in college reports of tripos results (e.g. those in The Caian) until the 1990s.
