An independent research charity, founded in 1905 as a small hospital in Hartington Grove, and moved to its present site, in Worts Causeway, in 1912. In 1928 it was renamed the Strangeways Research Laboratory. In the 1990s the emphasis of its research changed from rheumatoid arthritis to genetic epidemiology.
