As COVID-19 restrictions are gradually eased on University of Cambridge sites, we are so glad to be able to remove some limitations on your experience of using the libraries ahead of the academic year 2021-22.

We are, as ever, committed to keeping our users and our staff safe. We expect our users to be conscientious in respecting the University’s current guidance around the continued emphasis on Hands | Face | Space. The following outline describes what you can expect at the University Library. You may find practices to be different in Faculty and Department Libraries, where protocols around social distancing and face coverings may be set by the relevant faculty or department.

Members of the University of Cambridge with a Raven password may read the University’s Guidance on easing of Covid-19 restrictions in full.

  • The use of face coverings is strongly recommended inside the library. They can be removed, but with an ongoing consideration for others who may prefer to use them. You should strongly consider wearing a face covering to move around library spaces.
  • The University recommends that you consider wearing face coverings in areas where it isn’t possible to maintain an appropriate social distance, or in areas where adequate ventilation is compromised. You may also wish to use face coverings where your own risk assessment identifies you should wear appropriate PPE (providing additional personal protection to you as well as to others).
  • The University encourages a degree of social distancing. Library users are asked to use library spaces with consideration for staff and fellow users, and we strongly recommend that users maintain a courteous social distance on library sites. There are few formal restrictions on routes around the library and on use of library spaces; some restrictions may remain at ‘pinch points’ such as entrances and exits, and where required by the size and ventilation of specific areas.
  • Enhanced handwashing / sanitisation is encouraged. You will find hand sanitiser at entrances and exits and in communal areas such as Reading Rooms. You may take advantage of the DIY cleaning stations.
  • Please do not come to the library if you feel unwell or have any symptoms of Covid-19. We expect library users to follow current government requirements on Covid testing and self-isolation.

You will see notices in the library to remind you of what we ask of our users and staff. We will continue to review these recommendations with guidance from the central University.

In line with the University’s guidance, we are able to remove booking for some of our services. Please find the latest service information here.
