Click & Collect PLUS is no longer available as users may now instead book to consult non-borrowable modern material in the Main Reading Room.

Once you have finished using the item, you need to make an appointment to return it to the University Library. You will have been sent details of how to do this when you made your collection appointment.  

 


 

 

 

Some of the items in our modern collections (published post-1990) cannot be taken out of the West Room under normal circumstances. This material is marked on iDiscover as ‘not borrowable’ and is not eligible to be ordered through the standard Click & Collect service.

As it is not currently possible for our users to consult non-borrowable modern material in the West Room, we have made available a temporary service, Click & Collect PLUS, to enable some current members of the University of Cambridge to access these particular collections for research purposes.

 

Who is eligible to use Click & Collect PLUS? 

The service is available to postgraduates, teaching and research staff, and MPhil students at the University of Cambridge who need to access these particular collections for research purposes. We regret that service is not currently available to other library users: we will keep this under regular review and hope to be able to welcome back the wider membership of the library as soon as possible. 

 

What can I borrow?

You may request up to five Click & Collect PLUS items; make sure you have space on your library account to borrow them.

It is not possible to lend all books that would normally be fetched to the West Room - some will be too fragile or valuable to lend. We will do our best to help where we can; in some cases the item may be available in digital format or there may be a copy in a Faculty or Department Library, and we will direct you to these sources instead.

In order to prioritise access to academic books, this service does not include

 

  • books published before 1990
  • newspapers
  • non-academic books including fiction
  • books for children
  • books fetched to Special Collections Reading rooms (Aoi/Maps/Music)

 

This is a limited service: we can answer 50 requests a week in total. If this capacity is reached, we will ask you to resubmit your request the following week. 

 

How does the service work? 

This is not quite the same as our standard Click & Collect service, so please read through these guidelines before requesting an item.

Request the item

You should begin by logging in to iDiscover using your Raven account (for full instructions, please see the iDiscover LibGuide). 

Once you have identified the item you wish to access, and established that it can't be accessed by other means such as the Scan & Deliver service, please complete this form:

Book a collection appointment

We will get back to you via email to let you know if the item can be borrowed, and will invite you to book an appointment to collect the item. You will need to wait for us to send this email to book an appointment; appointments cannot be booked in advance of this notification.

Once you have booked an appointment, you will receive an automated confirmation email from "LibCal". Please bring this appointment confirmation with you, along with some photo ID (such as a university card, driving licence, passport), when you come to your appointment.  

You will not be able to collect the item without an appointment. If you miss your appointment, you will need to re-book a new time.

Particular care should be taken with these books whilst they are on loan to you to ensure that they can be used by future readers. Please keep the item only as long as you need to use it.

 

Return the item

Click & Collect Plus items cannot be returned to the drop box.

Once you have finished using the item, you need to make an appointment to return it to the University Library. You will be sent details of how to do this when you make your collection appointment.  

 

Attending your appointments

When you arrive at the University Library, please follow signs to the designated collection point.

You must wear a face covering when you enter the building unless you have a medical exemption.

While waiting to collect or return your book, please observe social distancing at all points by maintaining a 2 metre distance from others. On entry, please show your ID; if you are collecting items on someone else’s behalf, please show the email sent to the requestor to confirm their collection slot. You will be required to use hand sanitizer before collecting your books. 

The books for collection will have been issued to your library account.

 

How are you ensuring my safety and the safety of library staff? 

The safety of library users and library staff is paramount, and at the heart of all of our recovery planning. 

Collection and return is by appointment only so that we can ensure that it is possible to practise social distancing effectively at our collection point.

We are minimising handling of books and all other materials. Staff will not touch your ID or any other documentation. 

We request that you do not use anti-bacterial wipes on any library books as this may cause damage. 

  

How quickly can I collect the book? 

We anticipate that you will be able to collect books within 3 days (excluding weekends) after ordering, although it depends on your availability and selection of appointment. Books will be held at the collection point for 72 hours (excluding weekends) before being returned to the stacks.

 

Can I collect books on behalf of someone else? 

Yes. They must request the books and arrange a collection appointment. You will need to bring a copy of the confirmation email for the appointment with you.
