Lost and found: the serendipity of collecting

In the mid-19th century Cambridge scientists setting up new museums relied on serendipity to acquire specimens—for example in 1865 when a huge whale washed up on Pevensey Bay, Sussex. Today, artist Jo Atherton works with found objects gathered on the UK coastline. In this talk, Boris Jardine and Jo reflect on the moment of discovery, when lost becomes found, and explore the very human desire to collect. It is accompanied by an exhibition of objects from Cambridge University Library and from Jo’s collection.

Part of the Being Human Festival, 17-25 November 2017.

Free event. Booking essential - click here to book.

The Modern Library

Join us for an evening of thought-provoking discussion and seasonal celebrations at the Library.

Dr Gordon Johnson will lead a panel of special guests to explore how libraries are developing new approaches to their use and, indeed, enhancing their importance in the present age. Sharing their expertise and appreciation for libraries, the panel will discuss their views, answer your questions and offer insights on this topic from their respective subject areas.

Beginning at 18:00, the discussion will be preceded by a carol performance in the Entrance Hall at 17:30 - 17:45, and followed by drinks and nibbles in the Milstein Exhibition Centre at 19:00 - 20:00.

Exclusive Friends event. Friends £7 / Guests of Friends £8. Please book via tinyurl.com/ULXmas17 or by posting cash/cheque to Friends Events at Cambridge University Library, West Road, Cambridge, CB3 9DR.
