The papers of Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes (1858-1945), 1st marquess of Crewe, Lord Privy Seal 1908 and 1912-1915, Secretary of State for India 1910-1915, Ambassador to Paris 1922-1928, and Secretary of State for War 1931, came to the University Library after his death. The collection consists of over 150 archive boxes of letters and political papers, which have been roughly divided into a number of sections, including General Correspondence, Personal Papers, Speeches, Miscellaneous Papers, and India Office papers.

With very few exceptions, still covered by Cabinet Office restrictions, the Crewe Papers are all open to researchers holding full Library reader's tickets. An outline catalogue and detailed card index are maintained in the Manuscripts Reading Room.
