An examiner. The first appointment of moderators (who tend to come in pairs) to assist the proctors with the assessing and moderating of undergraduate disputations, was in 1680/1; from then until 1810 the moderators were usually themselves also the examiners, but from then on the examinations were under the control of the proctors, the examiners and the moderators. The last appointment was in 1909, the last year in which the results of the mathematical tripos were in order of merit, rather than alphabetical within each class.
