Professorships founded by a reigning monarch, of which there are seven in Cambridge, those of Divinity, Physic [Medicine], Greek, Hebrew and Civil Law, founded by Henry VIII in and around 1504; that of Modern History founded by George I in 1724, and that of English Literature, actually founded in the name of rather than by Edward VII in 1910. The Regius Professors of Civil Law, Physic and Modern History, along with the King Edward Professorship of English Literature, are appointed by the Crown on the advice of the Prime Minister.
