John Mere (d. 1558), Esquire Bedell, and Registrary 1543-58, left to the University two houses in St Bene’t’s parish and the unexpired term of years in the lease of a garden opposite, in return for which the University entered into a bond with his executors for an annual sermon in St Bene’t’s church on the Wednesday of Easter week. The sermon, which still continues, is either by the Vice-Chancellor or, far more often, by the Vice-Chancellor’s nominee, and, by tradition, is followed by genteel merrymakings at Corpus Christi College.
