Biography:

Charlotte Scott went up to Girton College in 1876 on a scholarship to study mathematics. In 1880 she placed as the eight wrangler in the mathematical tripos, although women were not then ranked. Following outcry over Scott’s omission from the official list, the following year the University voted in favour of ranking women with the men in the tripos. In 1885 she received her D.Sc. from the University of London, becoming one of the first British women to receive a doctorate.
