Biography: 

The first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Dame Rosemary Murray was also the founder of the women’s college New Hall (now Murray Edwards) in 1954 – the first new college in Cambridge for more than 80 years.

During World War Two, she served in the Women’s Royal Navy Service and rose to become a chief officer. She was then a Demonstrator in Chemistry at Cambridge from 1947-52 and a Fellow of Girton College from 1946 to 1954. She was President of New Hall from 1964-81 and also spent 30 years as a magistrate.
