Biography:

Dr Alice Roughton was a psychiatrist, medical campaigner, a pioneer in the movement against nuclear weapons, and conservationist. She was educated at St Andrews and combined a general practice with psychiatry, in which she qualified at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Founder of the Civic Society in 1959, Roughton was on Cambridge city’s listed buildings panel for many years: campaigning in the 1960s for the preservation of her beloved city. She was one of the first to join the Medical Association for Prevention of War in the early 1950s, became a member of the Executive Committee in 1960, and later its chairman in 1977. One of her greatest achievements was the campaign, alongside friend Lord Silkin, for the passing of the 1967 Abortion Act. She was a loyal member of the Medical Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons, and involved in forming MEDACT in 1992, of which she became vice-president.
