Margaret Masterman read Modern Languages and Moral Sciences at Newnham College. She was a founding member of the Epiphany Philosophers, who studied the relationship between science and religion, and launched the group’s journal, Theoria to Theory. In 1955, realising the possibilities afforded by newly-developed computers, she founded and directed the Cambridge Language Research Unit (CLRU), a major research centre in computational linguistics. Masterman was also a cofounder and first Vice-President of Lucy Cavendish College.
