The University Library offers an Inter-Library Loan service which provides access to material not held within Cambridge University.

A wide variety of printed and microform material can be obtained from the British Library and other Libraries within the UK and overseas, including:

  • Books (and chapters from books)
  • Theses
  • Journal articles (and loan of whole issues)
  • Conference papers
  • Selected microforms

Anyone who has access to the University Library may use this service. The fee for an Inter-Library Loan request is currently £5.00 for members of Cambridge University and £12.00 for all other readers. Inter-Library Loan requests can be submitted by either of the following methods:


Submit your Inter-Library Loan request online, with payment by Credit or Debit Card (Visa, Delta, Mastercard, Solo, Maestro (if issued in the UK), and Visa Electron, but not Amex) using the University's eSales payment platform. If you do not currently have an eSales account, please register here before accessing the online form.

If you have already submitted an online inter-library loans request but were unable to submit payment, you may access the online payment platform here. (If you have problems using the payment system, please switch your browser to Internet Explorer)

Paper If you prefer to pay by cash or cheque, please complete our Universal ILL Request form which is available at the West Room Enquiry Desk or can be accessed here. Please print the form, fill it in and hand in at the ILL Enquiry Desk in the West Room, with payment, or send through the University Messenger Service (Cambridge University premises only) or the postal service. Cheques should be made payable to 'University of Cambridge'.
