The Reading Room, housing the Library's main reference collection and with 192 seats for readers, is located on the first floor of the University Library. It may be used by any reader who wishes to consult reference works housed in the room (classmarks R100-R900 and Ref) or for general reading of books from any part of the open Library.

The Reading Room and West Room together constitute the Reference Department, whose staff are responsible for the delivery of the University Library’s service to its users both in person and remotely.

The Reference Department has six main service functions: enquiry work; book fetching; maintenance of the reference collections; assistance to readers in the use of IT; assistance to readers with special needs and user education.
