Cambridge University Library

zero contact service

We have designed a range of services to safely begin to expand access to world-class physical collections not available in electronic format.

Zero contact services

  • Click & Collect - order selected physical books and journals online then make an appointment to collect the items from a designated point at Cambridge University Library.

  • Scan & Deliver - request an individual scanned copy of one chapter (or 5%) of a monograph or one article per issue of a journal from the University Library’s modern collections, subject to relevant conservation approval and copyright permission. You may order free low resolution digital scans of Special Collections items for personal research use if the material you need is suitable for scanning and the volume of your request is reasonable.

You may also use this form to request a printout of a chapter or article from any material held by the library as Electronic Legal Deposit, normally accessible only via designated computers.

  • Ask a curator - engage the help of our expert curators who will be returning to work in the University Library building as part of a carefully controlled plan to re-launch physical library services in line with University coronavirus safety protocols. They can discuss your questions over the phone or via a video call, and may be able to check material on your behalf in order to answer specific questions. This service is available to all.

  • Users are able to return books to the UL or to the existing drop boxes on the Sidgwick site.

Using the reading rooms

  • Book a Visit - request that specific non-borrowable items are fetched, and then arrange an appointment to come into either the Main Reading Room or Rare Books Reading Room to consult them.

Please note that Click & Collect, Scan & Deliver and Book a Visit are only available to current staff and students (including ICE staff and students, and NHS partners).

Our FAQs on reopening have more information about the development of these services, including how we are managing our commitment to the safety of library staff and library users with zero contact services.

Please noteGovernment guidelines now state that face coverings should be worn in libraries and public reading rooms. We therefore ask readers visiting Cambridge University Libraries to wear a face covering in all areas of our libraries to keep everyone safe. We are highly sensitive and supportive to those staff and readers who are exempt from the expectation. Please visit the University’s Coronavirus Information pages for a helpful list of medical exemptions.
